SPIRITUAL SPRING CLEANING (BUT NOT THE WAY YOU THINK)

(Post by: Lilly Hobbs)

It’s officially beginning to feel like Spring here where I am in Ohio, and with all of this lovely Spring weather, I have been thinking about all of the spring cleaning I need to.

I just tackled my bedroom which has been in an interesting state since about mid-February and it became quite the undertaking. As I began to clean, I began to find more and more that needed to be done. I found things I wasn’t even aware of prior to beginning this task I had been putting off.

Somewhere in the middle of all of it, between moving things around, throwing things out, and realizing how much I had ignored, I started to notice how familiar this felt. Not just in my room, but in my life. Because the truth is, it’s a lot easier to let things pile up than it is to stop and deal with them.

And maybe that’s not just true physically.

It exposed more than just a messy room. It revealed how easy it is for me to ignore what’s right in front of me, and how quickly I can live around the mess instead of dealing with it.

So, how about we do some spiritual spring cleaning together today?

You see, spring cleaning isn’t about adding more, it’s about removing what’s crowding out the things of God.

The goal is not merely a more “put together” life, but a more available heart.

I would even argue that we’re pretty good at external cleaning, but pretty bad at internal surrender.

If you’re anything like me, it’s easy to organize your space, your schedule, and your goals, all while quietly neglecting your heart. Because it’s far easier to clean what people see than to confront what the Lord sees.

And over time, we can begin to convince ourselves that as long as we look spiritually healthy, everything is fine. When in reality, we may be masking distance, distraction, and even confusion in our walk with Jesus.

Even though some things aren’t sin, they can be distractions that get in the way of us wholeheartedly following the Lord and accomplishing the ministry He has given to us to accomplish.

Distractions can include things like:

  • Constant noise (podcasts, music, scrolling)
  • Overcommitment
  • Even ministry done without intimacy

Have no doubt that if it constantly fills your attention, it will eventually shape your affection.

Many of us avoid stillness because it exposes:

  • Anxiety
  • Comparison
  • Numbness
  • Distance from God

If we’re honest with ourselves today, that’s exactly the part we don’t like.

Because cleaning out our hearts means sitting in the stillness long enough for the Lord to reveal what’s actually there. It means allowing Him to gently point out what we’ve ignored, what we’ve justified, and what we’ve simply learned to live around.

But the beauty of this kind of “cleaning” is that Jesus isn’t asking you to fix it all on your own.

He’s simply asking for access.

He’s asking you to stop avoiding, stop numbing, stop filling every quiet moment and to allow Him to search your heart and make it new.

Because this was never about having a perfectly “put together” life. It’s about becoming a person who is fully available to the Lord.

So maybe this spring, instead of focusing on what you need to add to your life, you start asking a different question: What is taking up space in my heart that shouldn’t belong there anymore?

And then I challenge you to have the courage to bring it before the Lord. Not rushing the process. Not trying to clean it up first. Just bringing it honestly.

Because when you make room for Him, He is always faithful to fill it with His goodness and faithfulness.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.”

(Psalm 139:23-24)
