WHERE WE TEND TO BE

(Post by: Lilly Hobbs)

Life doesn’t look how I expected it to right now. I’ve been wrestling with that lately. It seems to me the expectations I had, of how I wanted things to look, or feel like, or be, have been thrown out the window of a building tall enough that I can’t quite see the ground below when I look out to see where they have all gone.

Isn’t it funny that we always tend to think there’s somewhere better than where we are? When our plans, hopes, and expectations fall by the wayside, our default reaction is to lose sight of everything that really matters and give up.

There is truly no better example of this than the Israelites when they were wandering in the wilderness.

I heard a song the other day that I really related with, that said,

“I’m starting to think
That maybe Disney left out a couple scenes
The boring parts they thought we didn’t need
Yeah they got the highs and lows but in between
Is where we tend to be”

(Where We Are – Kyle Hume)

Everyone is always discussing the mountaintops and the valleys, but what about the in-between?

That’s where I am.

You see, the Israelites were in the in-between, and they didn’t make the most of it. They had just been rescued from slavery, they were being led by God and by a man of God, they crossed over the Red Sea on dry ground, they were being provided for daily, and the list goes on.

Where we tend to be in life is somewhere between Egypt and Canaan, and for some reason we can’t quite figure out what that in-between season looks like. Myself included.

I haven’t met very many people who can just let themselves be, especially when in the midst of uncertainty. Humanity has an innate tendency to fix problems and solve everything in its own power, which is not much.

The song goes on to say,

“Maybe life is less of tryna fight it
And more about the beauty in the drive than the arriving”

What if the wilderness was made for worship? What if it beckons us to come to the end of ourselves and start afresh with Jesus?

I’m convinced it’s so much better to know Him for who He is, than to merely know where we’re headed.

What if you’re not stuck, friend? What if Jesus is inviting you to obey in the small things, or to quiet your soul and rid it of its false comforts, or to get you to release the control you have been trying to steal from Him?

The rugged terrain between Egypt and Canaan is where we tend to be, but if Jesus isn’t in a hurry, then why are we?

Slow down and take off your sandals. Where you tend to be might be holy ground.

“Often when you wait for something, it’s hard to be patient. Especially when you taste and see a little bit of the promise, only to be told, “Wait more”.”  (Unknown)

SO, WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE?

= Are you worshipping in the midst of a wilderness season?

= In what ways did you relate with this post?

= What are you going to do differently?
