WHY WE’RE FASTING TOGETHER – The Heart Behind Our 30‑Day Community Fast

(Post by: Lilly Hobbs)

Over the last couple of weeks, you may have seen us talking about fasting on Instagram and Facebook, sharing various reflections that feel heavier than a caption but lighter than a sermon. That wasn’t accidental. It was an overflow.

This season has been marked by a growing conviction: we are too easily distracted, too easily dulled, and too comfortable calling noise “normal.” So, Madie and I decided to fast; not as a trend, not as a performance, but as a return.

This blog post is here for two specific reasons:

  1. To share the why behind the fasting content you’ve been seeing
  2. To clearly explain the 30‑day community fast for anyone who hasn’t heard us talk about it on the podcast or seen it on social media

Why fasting and why now?

Biblical fasting has never been about punishing the body or proving spiritual maturity. It’s always been about reordering desire.

Fasting reveals what rules us. It exposes what we reach for when we’re bored, anxious, lonely, or tired. It allows us to see what we trust to comfort us instead of the Lord.

In Scripture, God’s people fasted when they needed clarity, repentance, humility, or direction. They fasted before battles, during repentance, and when seeking God’s will. Not because food or pleasure was evil, but because even good things can become idols.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been asking ourselves hard questions:

  • What has our attention before God gets it?
  • What do we numb ourselves with instead of sitting with the Lord?
  • What voices are shaping us more than Scripture?

Fasting became the natural response.

What we mean when we say “fasting”

For some, fasting means food. For others, it means stepping away from social media, entertainment, shopping, sugar, caffeine, or constant noise. While Scripture often refers to food fasts, the heart posture matters just as much as the method.

This fast is about removing what has subtly taken God’s place and replacing it with intentional time in His presence.

If you take something away but don’t replace it with prayer, Scripture, and stillness, you’re just doing self‑denial not spiritual discipline.

The 30‑Day Community Fast: What it is

The 30‑day community fast is an invitation to experience something more.

For 30 days, we’re inviting our community to fast from one thing that has had too much influence in your life and intentionally pursue God in its place.

The heart of the fast:

  • Less distraction, more devotion
  • Less consumption, more communion
  • Less noise, more obedience

We are fasting together because spiritual disciplines were never meant to be isolated. There is power in collective obedience and shared hunger for God.

How to participate

  1. Pray first. Ask the Lord what He’s inviting you to lay down.
  2. Choose one thing to fast from for 30 days.
  3. Replace it intentionally with Scripture, prayer, worship, or silence.
  4. Stay consistent, not perfect. Grace does not cancel discipline.
  5. Engage with the community through posts, reflections, and shared encouragement.

What we’ve been learning already:

Fasting slows you down.

It makes space for conviction and brings clarity.
It reveals how often we reach for comfort instead of Christ.

It reminds us that God is not distant, just drowned out.

An invitation, not a pressure

If you’re reading this and thinking, “I’ve already missed the start,” you haven’t missed anything.

Start today.
Start small.
Start honestly.

We are believing that God will meet those who seek Him, not because fasting earns His presence, but because it makes room for it.

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)
