(Post by: Colton) Blogmas Day Twenty 2024
During the Christmas season, kids are always concerned about writing their letters to Santa, letting him know what it is they really want for Christmas. I’m quite sure most of us grew up writing Santa letters and trying to be on our best behavior during the months leading up to Christmas, hoping that just maybe Santa would fulfill our request.
Since being saved, I have come to realize just how worldly Christmas has become and how this idea of Santa has become the focal point of this holiday. When in reality, it’s about something bigger than us. Something we can’t quite wrap our minds around.
It’s about Jesus.
Each of us are seeking after things that will fulfill our souls in this lost world, yet the world has lost touch with the very thing that gives it its fulfillment. I have pursued worldly things in a desperate attempt to find the one thing that would satisfy my soul and give me the fulfillment for which I longed. I searched everywhere, trying drugs, pornography, and anything the enemy could get me to turn to.
We spend Christmas writing letters to Santa, trying to behave and do good things hoping that we get what we want in return. Yet we have an entire book which has more prophecies fulfilled than any other book that has ever existed. A book that, in grave detail, has spoken to each one of us about this Savior who was born, died on a cross, and was resurrected for us. He literally came down and took on our punishment just because He simply loved us.
Did we ask Him to come to earth? No. Did we write Him a letter asking him to die on a cross for our sin so that we could spend eternity with Him? No. He did this out of complete willingness and love for each and every one of us.
Unlike Santa whom the world worships, we don’t have to ask for a single thing from Jesus. He knows us. He knows what we need and what we desire with our hearts. He knows what is good for us.
He’s already in pursuit of us. This is the beauty of Christmas. He’s always there waiting for us to make that leap of faith, allowing Him to lead us and be Lord of our lives.
All we have to do is be obedient and accept Him in our hearts. That’s it.
Santa is temporary, and we talk about him for a couple weeks out of the year. Jesus is forever, and is there helping us every step of the way. Even when we don’t see it. I didn’t acknowledge His constant presence for 20 years of my life when I was running around living without Him.
Santa’s message is, if you do good you will receive a reward. Jesus, however, gives me exactly what I don’t deserve, Himself.
We have eternal life with Jesus, because His free gift to us does not depend on how much good we do. It is simply dependent on His pursuit of us. There are no underlying conditions or terms that have the ability to hold us back. All you have to do is accept it.
As a result of this free gift, you and I can come to Him with gratitude and worship instead of demands and requests.
Hopefully this changes the way we see this Christmas season. What if we replaced our demands and requests, as well as our list to Santa, and made an intentional effort to seek the greatest gift we could ever receive.
The gift of eternal life found only in our Savior, Jesus.
