A DRIVE THRU CHRISTMAS

(Post by: Colton) Blogmas Day Six 2024

It’s December… already? In a few weeks it will be 2025, and our lives will be starting the same cycle they do every New Year. January, then the next thing you know it’s December and we do it all over again.

We tend to live our lives as fast paced as we can each and every day. It doesn’t matter what season of life we are in, we are always busy, and we are always trying to get somewhere faster.

I know I am prone to live this way. Always wanting to get to the next big thing and accomplish certain goals, without ever really taking the time to intentionally slow down.

This may be how the world has conditioned us to live, but is this the kind of lifestyle Jesus calls Christians to? Should we be speeding through life always rushing to do the next thing?

Our lives closely resemble a drive thru. We go to Jesus in our time of need and say something along the lines of, “Hi, I’ll take one large blessing with a side of miracles, and can you take out any kind of pain and suffering? Okay thanks, bye.”

We don’t take the time to slow down and thank the Lord for the path we are on. Sometimes we acknowledge what He has done for us, but rarely do we stop to truly praise Him for it.

We ask for all these blessings or for His divine help when we get into a tough spot, but as soon as Jesus asks us to surrender ourselves and our lives to Him, we often refuse and believe He is asking too much of us.

Instead of surrendering our hearts and lives to Christ, Christians will be out in the world frantically trying to find the best deals and the best gifts, checking of their to-do list, while ignoring Jesus and how He wants to change their lives this Christmas. Amidst the business, they forget that our Savior was willing to leave His throne, come down and take on flesh, die on a cross, and be killed by those He created and loves.

Because we forget these things, we get mad at Him when He allows a little pain and suffering amidst the blessings He pours out on us.

Imagine a bride and groom on their wedding day, dancing to their favorite song. The world seems to slow down, maybe even stop, for that simple two-minute song. As they take the moment in, they feel as though they are the only people in the room. They talk about the day, about the future, and about how much they love each other. That slow dance seems to stop the world from turning.

Imagine if that was how we lived our lives with Jesus. What would happen if we would take one step at a time, quieted our souls, and allowed Jesus the opportunity to lead us? And with each step, praised Him for who He is and all that He has saved us from.

I’m preaching to myself here.

It concerns me that I will rush through these December days leading up to Christmas, spending my time thinking about the next day or week and all that I have to do, or about the next year and what I want it to look like.

However, I want to challenge myself, and anyone else who may need it, to slow down today. Use this Christmas time wisely. Praise the Lord no matter where you are or what you are doing.

It may be difficult to do sometimes, but it’s worth every second. I’m currently learning this lesson myself.

Instead of settling for what is quick and convenient, how about we take our time, and remember that maybe “a drive thru” kind of Christmas will never truly satisfy the longings we all have.

These longings reveal to us that what our hearts lack: some quiet, meaning, and purpose.

“God never hurries. There are no deadlines against which He must work. Only to know this is to quiet our spirits and relax our nerves.” – A. W. Tozer
